Raising the Bar Platform Extensions

Posted on Nov 20, 2018 by dartdallas
You may have heard about the construction being done to build platform extensions on DART’s Red and Blue light rail lines. In Part 1 of our series “Raising the Bar: Platform Extensions”, we are looking at why this work is necessary in the first place. Why are platform extensions needed? When the original stations along the Red and Blue lines were built, they were constructed with our current two-car train length in mind. But with North Texas’ rapid growth, there is an increasing need for stations that can accommodate three-car trains to add capacity for more passengers and ease crowding. When the newer stations along the Orange and Green lines were constructed, they were already built to support the longer trains. However, before the longer trains can operate throughout the system, platforms at 28 stations along the Blue and Red lines need to be extended. During early design of the original stations, DART preserved space for these extensions to make it easier to build in the future. Which stations are affected? Construction work will be done at 28 stations along the Red and Blue lines, including 20 stations in Dallas, 4 stations in Richardson, 2 stations in Plano, and 2 stations in Garland. See the map below to view which stations will undergo extension work: What’s next? Stay tuned for Part 2 of this series, where we will learn more about how and when the work will be done to ensure minimal disruptions for our customers and how it will benefit you when its complete.
