You made it through another week! Luckily for you, the weekend should be warm, mild and, as of press time, rain-free. Dive into these cool outdoor events – plus a one-of-a-kind art exhibition and a favorite annual film festival. Keep the laid-back, springtime vibe going by riding DART and avoiding traffic.

Friday, April 27

Taking place Friday and Saturday, Plano Artfest is a free event that encourages creative curiosity and showcases local artists. It includes the beloved Chalk It Up competition, as well as live music, a fashion show, performances from local theater groups, a kids’ zone with bounce houses and – of course – plenty of art. It’s all in the Downtown Plano Art District, the quaint and charming neighborhood adjacent to Downtown Plano Station on the Red Line.

It’s the last weekend of Yayoi Kusama: All the Eternal Love I Have for the Pumpkins, which runs through Sunday at the Dallas Museum of Art. The installation is one of the Japanese artist’s signature Infinity Mirror Rooms – spaces lined with mirrored glass to create the illusion of never-ending space. The reflective chamber contains yellow gourds covered in black polka dots, letting the viewer become part of the art. It’s a unique, immersive experience, and it starts by boarding any DART Rail line to St. Paul Station and walking the three blocks to the DMA. The D-Link and M-Line Trolley will get you right to the museum.

The USA Film Festival runs through Sunday, and is being held at the Angelika Film Center, near Mockingbird Station. Friday will see screenings of “Leave No Trace,” “Larger Than Life: The Kevin Aucoin Story,” and several programs of short films (including one highlighting Texas filmmakers).

Saturday, April 28

Earth Day has come and gone, but it’s still spring, the time to celebrate all things green. Irving’s Arbor Day Celebrationincludes interactive displays about trees, nature and the outdoors. There will be live music from the Texas Gypsies, Q&As with tree experts, a demonstration of an oak tree being transplanted, and cool vendor exhibits (including food). Kids can enjoy a humorous snake show and learn how to climb a tree safely. While supplies last, you’ll even receive a free tree sapling. The event takes place at Heritage Park, served by Downtown Irving/Heritage Crossing Station on the Trinity Railway Express (TRE). Numerous bus routes also will get you there.

Elsewhere in Irving, the environmentally friendly theme continues with Bicycle Fest, at North Lake College. It’s a chance to learn about the benefits of cycling, as well as safe routes for riders, transit options for commuting, tutorials on bike maintenance and information about cycling gear. There will also be live music, food trucks, a bicycle rodeo and more. Ride your bike to the nearest DART Station and take the Orange Line to North Lake College Station.

For fun of the four-wheeled variety, head to the Wheels of Hope Car Show in downtown Garland, benefiting the Hope Clinic, which provides health care to low-income residents. In addition to a fantastic exhibition of vintage cars, there will be a blues/rock band, displays of creative hood art and kids’ activities. You’ll find it on the square, near Downtown Garland Station on the Blue Line.

Sunday, April 29

May is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, and you can get a jump-start at the Asian Festival in Klyde Warren Park. Surround yourself with the cultures, food, art and music of Asia while taking in interactive dance and other performances. You can even participate in origami and chopsticks workshops. This is a great way to spend a Sunday in the park. But you don’t have to park your car; take the short walk from Pearl/Arts District or St. Paul stations, served by all four DART Rail lines, or catch the D-Link or M-Line Trolley.
