May 19 is National Bike to Work Day, and DART encourages you to grab your bike and ride to work. Whether you pedal all the way to the office or cycle in combination with a DART train or bus, you’ll be doing yourself a favor and maybe starting a new, healthy habit.
Want one good reason to start commuting by bike? Here are four.
- Cycling promotes good health. In fact, it’s one of the healthiest all-around physical activities you can do. Riding a bike increases your cardiovascular fitness, decreases stress levels, improves joint mobility and strengthens bones. And if you make it part of your commute, you can get a workout even if you have a busy life with little time for the gym. And that’s not just spin!
- Bike commuting equals savings. With gas prices firmly established at well over $2 per gallon, commuting isn’t cheap – especially when you add in all the wear and tear that stop-and-go traffic puts on your vehicle. Why not also use a bicycle – in combination with DART – to meet up with friends? It just may help your financial health right along with your physical condition.
- It’s eco-friendly. A major contributor of air pollution is passenger vehicles. When you commute by bike, you’re doing your part to help us all breathe a little easier!
- Cycling reduces traffic congestion. We live in one of the most congested regions of the country. Just think about how much time you spend sitting in traffic each year. By cycling part or all the way to work on your two-wheeler, you become part of the solution.
