Plan DART’s next rail line

DART is planning a second light rail line through downtown Dallas for 2021. The D2 project is designed to make it easier to use transit to reach the most popular stops by serving new parts of the Central Business District.

D2 is still in development, and the Federal Transit Administration and DART are holding another round of public meetings to help involve the community in helping DART and local and federal officials decide where the line should go. Those meetings are scheduled for Wednesday, June 15. Both are at the Scottish Rite Temple at 500 S. Harwood in downtown Dallas. One starts at noon and the other at 6:30. The content is the same at both meetings.

Right now DART is conducting preliminary engineering and preparing a Supplemental Draft Environmental Impact Statement for the project. These steps are required for any rail project that wants federal funds.

DART has identified $325 million in local funds (Year of Expenditure) for the line and has asked the federal government for an equal funding match. Based on very favorable FTA rating of the project, DART anticipates being included in the FY18 federal budget. While the plans for the new line are big, there is a budget and DART has several new projects in development.

For example, construction will begin later this year on a multi-year plan to lengthen 28 Red and Blue line rail platforms outside the CBD. When that’s compete all DART lines will be able to operate three-car trains creating more capacity and giving customers more room, especially during rush hour. That project is being funded by the Texas Department of Transportation and federal funds. DART also is working with the City of Dallas on new streetcar lines in downtown and perhaps Uptown.

The D2 meetings are really an open house, with a very brief presentation at the beginning. Meeting information will include:

  • Existing conditions and key issues along the project corridor
  • How impact assessments will be conducted
  • Design progress including alignment, station concepts and cross sections
  • Project schedule and next steps

  1. Rob F says:

D2 is a waste of money. Stupid to add lines where people can walk within ten minutes. Try adding EXPRESS lines so its not a 40 minute ride on the busiest lines of orange and red!
