Throwback Thursday: Grand Opening of DART Light Rail

On June 14, 1996, DART celebrated the opening of the first 11.2 miles of the 20-mile light rail transit starter system with weekend festivities followed by a week of free rides.

That Friday, hundreds of people came downtown to attend the dedication ceremony and watch the first train come through. And on Super Saturday, June 15, thousands of customers braved the 100-degree Texas heat to ride the trains to the 14 stations that opened while attending neighborhood celebrations at eight stations.
