Officials from the Dallas City Council, McKinney Avenue Transit Authority, DART, Downtown Dallas Inc., Dallas Convention and Visitors Bureau, Uptown Dallas Inc., the Dallas Arts District, the Federal Transit Administration and Klyde Warren Park were on hand Friday for the formal dedication of the M-Line Trolley extension into downtown Dallas.
The $9.9 million project constructed a .65-mile track-extension of the MATA trolley line creating a reverse loop along Olive and St. Paul streets that makes for safer trolley operations and better access to DART’s St. Paul Station.
“For the first time in 59.5 years, a streetcar will be penetrating the core of downtown Dallas,” said Phil Cobb, MATA co-founder and chairman.
Cobb was joined by DART President/Executive Director Gary Thomas, Dallas City Councilmen Philip T. Kingston and Lee Kleinman.
The dedication was the weekend’s first event to celebrate the extension. The public is invited Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to ride the trolley, get deals at participating businesses and explore the extension at the M-Line Trolley Social.
“They say big things happen here and this is another example,” said Kleinman.
