Many recall Maya Angelou as a civil rights activist, educator and author, but did you know she was also a pioneer in the transportation industry? At the age of 16, Angelou became San Francisco's first black streetcar conductor. In a 2013 interview with Oprah Winfrey, Angelou tells the story of waiting for two weeks, day in and day out, at the Market Street Railway office for the chance to apply to become a conductor. Angelou died Wednesday at 86. Transportation leaders remember Maya Angelou [Washington Post]
